About us
Moonware builds products to modernize airfield operations, providing the digital infrastructure to coordinate, optimize, and automate aircraft ground handling.
HALO, our flagship product, is used by airfield teams to optimize flight turnarounds. It serves as a centralized operating layer to manage and oversee tasks, communications, and performance. By enhancing operational visibility and control, HALO enables faster, more reliable, and standardized ground operations.
Our vision is to provide fully autonomous ground operations. HALO serves as the digital infrastructure to support that transition, connecting data, people, and machines to build toward automated airfields.
Moonware’s team combines aviation operations domain knowledge together with software and engineering expertise from top Silicon Valley tech companies. As we scale, we’re expanding the Moonware ecosystem to support the next generation of air transportation.
About the role
Moonware is seeking a hands-on Senior Software Engineer to lead and own the infrastructure that powers HALO, our Ground Traffic Control platform. In this role, you’ll architect, build, and operate the core systems that keep our real-time airfield operations running reliably, securely, and at scale. This is not a narrow SRE or backend-only role; it’s a deeply cross-functional engineering position. You’ll design cloud architecture, create resilient distributed systems, deploy high-availability services, and ensure the platform remains fast, observable, and fault-tolerant as we scale globally.
Responsibilities
Own the core infrastructure supporting HALO’s real-time systems: cloud environments, compute orchestration, networking, storage, and platform services
Design and build resilient, scalable distributed systems that handle high-throughput, mission-critical workloads
Implement and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code, automated provisioning, and repeatable deployments across environments
Drive observability across the stack, including logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, and alerting
Define and enforce reliability, performance, and availability standards for all production systems
Partner with backend, data, and field engineering teams to understand operational constraints and incorporate learnings into architectural decisions
Implement robust CI/CD pipelines that support rapid iteration with confidence and safety
Improve platform security, including identity, access control, service hardening, and incident response readiness
Make foundational decisions around infrastructure strategy as we expand into autonomy, mobility, and global-scale operations
Requirements
4+ years of experience as an infrastructure, backend, or platform engineer building and operating production systems
Deep experience with cloud-native infrastructure (AWS or GCP), including VPCs, networking, container orchestration, load balancing, compute, and storage
Strong experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or similar) and automation practices
Solid understanding of distributed systems (concurrency, resiliency patterns, service mesh, message brokers, etc.)
Proficient in one or more backend languages (Go preferred, Java, or similar)
Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and environment management
Experience designing for observability and high reliability (SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, monitoring)
Familiarity with both SQL and NoSQL databases and performance considerations
A product mindset: you care about solving the right problems and supporting customers and internal teams
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Comfortable in fast-paced startup environments with high ownership and cross-functional impact
This role might be for you if
You love building the invisible foundation that keeps complex systems running
Reliability, high availability, and performance are things you obsess over
You enjoy working closely with real-world operational systems—not just abstract cloud workloads
You thrive owning large architectural surfaces that many teams depend on
Aviation, autonomy, and mobility excite you
You want to help shape the infrastructure strategy for a fast-growing, high-impact technology platform
Nice to haves
Experience operating real-time or event-driven systems (Kafka, MQTT, WebSockets, etc.)
Background in aviation, mobility, IoT, robotics, or logistics
Prior experience in an early-stage startup
Experience with edge computing, device communication, or fleet telemetry
Exposure to service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd) or distributed tracing systems
